Kidz Therapy Services is approved by the New York State Education Department to provide mandated training in the needs of
children with autism to new special education teachers seeking certification
and administrators and supervisors of special education. The three hour training program has been developed in accordance
with the NYS Education Department’s Autism Syllabus. The coursework will enhance the participants’ understanding of autism
spectrum disorders by providing an overview of the disorder, introduce evidence based instructional methods and interventions,
behavior management and positive behavioral supports, effective collaborative techniques and resources. This course is open to
all who are interested, not just special educators and administers.
Please contact Marian Karcher at 516 747-9030 x 161 or email mkarcher@kidztherapy.com for more details.
According to NYSED, the following are required to take this course:
TEACHERS:
If the individual (teacher candidate) is enrolled in an approved and registered NYS special education program at a college or
university, the individual does not need the "approved coursework" or training because the content of the autism coursework is
already covered in the special education classes at the colleges. The State required these programs to adjust their curriculum
to ensure that the autism specific information was included in 2008. Therefore, individuals (teachers) receiving their special
education certificate through college recommendation are not required to have the SED approved coursework in question.
Many teachers who want to be special education certified apply for certification through the individual transcript evaluation
process. For individuals who are applying for a special education certificate through SED's TEACH system, on or after September 2, 2009,
the SED approved autism coursework training is required. Information regarding the requirement and applying for special education certificate
through TEACH may be found at http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/autism.html.
Special education teachers who received permanent or professional certification in special education or Students with Disabilities before September 2, 2009, are not required to have the training.
ADMINISTRATORS:
Certified administrators assigned to a special education positions (as determined by their LEA) were supposed to have the enhanced training in autism by September 9, 2009.
If the assignment occurred after that date, the administrators are to have the training as soon as "practicable" after their assignment.
Essentially this means that all certified administrators assigned to a special education position must have this training.
